Like many areas of science, neurogenesis is one where little work has been done looking at sex differences.
Neurogenesis is the process where new neurons are formed in the brain, which happens in the adult hippocampus. Previous research in this area has largely focused on male subjects, which has prevented researchers from understanding how this process might differ in females.

The UBC School of Biomedical Medical Engineering (SBME) and the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health (DMCBH) are excited to announce the recruitment of Dr. Manu Madhav.
As both a Core Member of the DMCBH and a Faculty Member in the SBME, Dr. Madhav will lead and encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration between scientists and research initiatives housed in these two units.
An important goal in multiple sclerosis (MS) research is determining how to repair or preserve myelin, the protective sheath covering nerve fibres which is damaged in people with the disease.
This is not an easy task, considering the exact process by which myelin is damaged is still not well understood. To get a better grasp on this, a team led by Dr. Jacqueline Quandt (pictured below) has been studying the role of ARNT2.

The main focus of the Haas lab has been to better understand autism, by studying how single nucleotide polymorphisms—substitutions of one nucleotide in the genome—change protein function in autism-associated genes.
